Types of Jobs
There are a lot of job opportunities at UPS, many of which are entry level. Drivers and package handlers are the most prominent of these positions. These are the people that you drop packages off with and the people that get them to their final destination. Other positions, such as fleet mechanics, customer service specialists, call center operators, managers, IT associates, and QA analysts also exist, just to name a few.
Drivers can expect to start out making about $25,000 per year, but if you prove yourself valuable to the company for an extended period of time, it is possible to make as much as $70,000 per year in this position. Drop off location employees and package handlers usually start out at around $9 per hour, but it’s not uncommon to see experienced employees make twice this.
Other positions typically will vary in pay depending upon the position and the experience. Managers can start out at around $45,000 per year, but if they are able to prove themselves as a valuable asset to the company, they can make much more. Sales reps can make about $30,000 to $40,000 per year to start, plus commissions in some cases. Other roles, such as corporate positions, will pay based upon the responsibility of the position.
UPS, as stated above, is one of the most successful and popular delivery companies in the world. They were founded in 1907, and this longevity has given them a lot of stability in the courier services industry. Hard workers in this company can find themselves with great job security and competitive pay.
They treat their employees well, offering benefits packages to qualified employees. They have employee profit sharing plans, 401(k) retirement accounts, health insurance policies, paid time off, and life insurance policies available for their employees, helping them to succeed both professionally and personally.
Who Can Apply?
You need to be 18 years old to work at UPS. Employees are expected to have clean background check reports and to have stellar driving records. The company will check both of these things before hiring. A high school diploma is a must, but entry level applicants do not need a college degree. This is preferred for corporate roles and management, though.
UPS employees are expected to be great workers when given independence. A lot of this job is conducted on your own, and your boss will expect you to do what you’re supposed to even if there’s nobody around checking on you. For example, a driver will be given a load of packages to deliver and then sent out on their own. The driver is expected to make each delivery in a timely fashion, and safe driving during all of this is a must.
Tips for Gaining Employment
To get started in a career at UPS, your first goal is to fill out a great application. Go to their home page, click on the U.S. Home link, and then go down to the bottom of the next page. There will be a link titled “Careers.” Once you click this, you can search for nearby job opportunities and fill out the application. Set aside about 45 minutes to an hour for the application, and be complete and accurate. This is the first impression that a hiring manager will have of you, so be sure to bring attention to any relevant experience you have.
At your interview, be professional, dressing nicely and acting politely. Talk about the experience you have that will help you to be successful here, especially if you have a delivery background or any sort of customer service experience. Both of these will be helpful to you as this is an industry where customer satisfaction is of the utmost. Be prepared to answer questions about yourself, but also have a few questions prepared to ask about the company and your role within it, too.
