Come See the Great Jobs at Macy’s

When it comes to department stores, there’s no company that has the same name recognition that Macy’s has. Macy’s was founded in 1858 in New York City, and is now one of the biggest department stores in the world. A career here can be quite rewarding, especially if you have a passion for helping others. If you are thinking of applying here, there’s some information that you will need to get started. We’ve provided the basics for you below.

Types of Jobs

Macy’s has a number of entry level positions, including sales associates, cashiers, and more. Supervisory and management roles are also present within each Macy’s location. Regional management positions exist, too, as do corporate jobs. Macy’s is a large company, and different locations may have different variations of these jobs within them. Both full and part time opportunities are available here.

Cashiers can expect to make about minimum wage to start out, but once experience is gained, this number will go up. Sales associates will start out just above minimum wage, but they have the capacity to earn commissions on some sales, and this raises their pay ceiling quite a bit. Once experience is gained, associates can sometimes expect to make a base of as much as $15 or $16 per hour.

General management roles within Macy’s can see yearly salaries of as much as $120,000, especially if they prove themselves to the company as being a valuable part of the team.

Why Macy’s?

Macy’s has a staying power that many other companies wish to emulate. Besides a loyal customer base, they also do a lot to take care of their employees. Macy’s employees can expect to see benefits such as 401(k) accounts, life and health insurance policies, paid time off, tuition assistance, adoption assistance, and recognition for employees if they go above and beyond when it comes to charity work.

Who Can Apply?

You need to be 18 years old to work at Macy’s. They do not strictly require a high school diploma in order to get a job, but they do prefer that you have one. A college degree is not required, but for managerial roles and beyond, it can prove to be helpful. This is a retail job, and connecting with customers is the most important thing, so potential employees are given extra consideration if they have superior people skills.

What’s Expected?

Again, this is a retail job, and there is a heavy focus on making sales. Macy’s employees are expected to put the customer first, but they are also expected to do what’s best for the company by promoting certain products and close sales. It’s expected that Macy’s employees have great people skills, be great sales people, and always act professionally.

It’s also expected that you don’t miss work and that you are on time to every shift, even if you are a part time employee. This will automatically indicate that you are serious about this job, and help better your chances of advancement in the company if you ever wish to move into a supervisory or management role.

Tips for Gaining Employment

In order to get a job with Macy’s you must first apply. Many locations still use paper applications that can be picked up in the store, but you can also fill out an application electronically. If you wish to do this, go to the Macy’s site, and at the very bottom of the home page, you will find a link titled “macysJOBS.” Here, you can search for jobs by location, category, or by keyword. Once you find an opportunity that suits you, you can click on the apply button, and begin the application process. Set aside at least 45 minutes to get the application completed, being sure to highlight your relevant experience, both professional and personal.

External Resources

At your interview, be sure to act and look professional. You should dress in the type of formal clothing that would be found at Macy’s, so that a hiring manager will see that you have done your research and are a good fit for the position. Answer their questions succinctly and politely, but also be sure to have a few points of your own that you would like to ask about as this also shows a dedication to the potential job opportunity.
