Types of Jobs
Like any hotel, Marriott contains many different types of jobs available. These include greeters, desk associates, service agents, guest service representatives, housekeepers, desk clerks, room attendants, maintenance workers, night auditors, and more. Many of these positions are entry level jobs, but there are also supervisory and managerial positions within the company.
Starting out, the entry level positions at Marriott like housekeepers and attendants begin at minimum wage or just over. However, because this is such a large company and because there is so much room for growth within the company, there is a lot of potential for advancement, both in terms of responsibility and in pay. Desk agents and service representatives typically make about $11 starting out, with pay rate increases as experience is gained. In managerial positions, assistant managers tend to start out around $45,000 per year, while general managers can make as much as $70,000 per year after a couple years of experience.
The international headquarters for Marriott is located in Bethesda, Maryland. If a position here is something of interest to you and you are located nearby, it could be worth looking into this a bit further.
Marriott is one of the biggest names in the hotel industry, and they have millions of guests that stay here. Having happy employees is an important part of their philosophy, and as a result of this, they offer benefits like 401(k) retirement planning, health, vision, and dental insurance, life insurance options, as well as a strong employee recognition program. Free hotel stays can also be earned after some amount of time within the company. They also offer bonuses for referring employees to the company once in a while.
Who Can Apply?
In order to apply for both part-time and fulltime positions within the company, you need to be at least 18 years old. A high school diploma or GED is not an absolute requirement to be employed here, but it is very beneficial to you. In some roles, having an appropriate associate’s degree is required, especially if you anticipate a role in management or a corporate position someday. However, some of the most important skills and traits you can have here are an ability to work hard, take and accurately follow directions, and to be able to interact with guests in a professional manner at all times.
Marriott employees are expected to have a customer service attitude at all times. This is an industry that focuses on helping people have a relaxing and comfortable experience away from their homes, and this involves a lot of work on your part. All employees are expected to be hard working and task oriented, able to work quickly in tense or stressful situations. Employees should always be polite and patient, as well.
Tips for Gaining Employment
In order to apply for a job at Marriott, you need to first go to their website. Many locations still have paper applications if you stop in in-person, but the online application is the easiest and quickest way to get started. Go to their homepage, and at the very bottom of this page on their banner, you will find a link titled “Careers.” Click on this, and you will be taken to another page where you can search through opportunities. You can search by location or by the job that you desire. Give yourself about 45 minutes to an hour to fill this out, being sure to double check everything before you finalize things on your end. At this screen you can also apply to jobs with Starwood, a Marriott-affiliated company.
At your interview, it is important that you show up looking and acting professional. Bring a paper copy of your resume with you, even though you have already submitted one electronically. Dress professionally even if you are going for an entry level job. Looking professionally in a customer-focused job shows that you are able to present yourself appropriately in this role, even if it is not a glamorous role. It will also show that you have potential for moving up within the ranks of the company. Be prepared for your interview, and have a couple questions of your own ready to go so that you can figure out more directly if this is the right opportunity for you and show off your seriousness about this job.
