Types of Jobs
Petco has a wide variety of entry level jobs, and many professional level positions, too. Entry type positions include cashiers, sales associates, stock persons, trainers, pet stylists, and animal technicians. Supervisors and management roles include team leaders, assistant managers, store managers, and loss prevention managers. There are also a number of larger roles within the company, such as district and regional management positions and corporate roles.
Entry level jobs can expect to see pay starting out around minimum wage, but upward growth is easy to obtain once you’ve gained experience within the company. Sales associates tend to start a little higher than this, and can quickly go to $9 an hour or higher once they have proven themselves to be valuable to the store’s performance.
Team leaders and assistant managers should expect around $12 or $13 per hour. Managers will see much more than this, although their pay may be linked to store performance. Still, a good manager will see a yearly salary of somewhere between $40,000 and $60,000 per year. If they can boost the store’s performance, pay can go higher. District and corporate jobs will pay commensurate with experience and may vary based upon the specific role that is played within the company.
Why Petco?
Petco is one of the biggest names in the pet store and pet supply business. They have over 1,000 locations, and they are a trusted name in this field. This has led to a great amount of stability within the locations, especially for top performing employees. Competitive pay also helps.
Petco does offer benefits to qualified employees. Because many of the entry level jobs here are part time, they do not qualify, but supervisors and managers do. These benefits include life insurance, 401(k) retirement plans with employer matching contributions, employee assistance programs, employee discounts, and paid time off. These are all designed to help employees take care of themselves now and into the future.
Who Can Apply?
To apply at Petco, you must be age 16 or older. Full time positions start at age 18. You do not need to have a high school diploma to apply for entry level jobs, but managers are required to have this educational requirement. Some upper level and corporate jobs will require a college degree in the appropriate background.
What’s Expected?
Petco is a great place to work, and they expect a lot out of their employees. You are expected to be punctual whenever you are scheduled for a shift, and you are expected to be ready to work and help customers the moment you clock in. This is first and foremost a retail position, and the customer is what should be your main focus.
It is expected that Petco employees always put the customers’ needs first, and that they do what is best for the company. This means that they should know the layout of the store, be able to find and recommend products, and always be professional and polite.

At your interview, be sure to dress and act professionally. Highlight any experience or anecdotal stories you have of your experience with animals. Even though it is people that buy Petco products, there is a large emphasis on pets and animals, and having a true love for your furry friends will improve your chances of landing a job.
