Types of Jobs
PetSmart has a wide variety of jobs, many of which are entry level. These include cashiers and sales associates. There are also pet care associates that are responsible for the daily tasks of caring for live animals within the store. Pay for these jobs begins at minimum wage and can go up to $9 per hour. Groomers are also present at most locations. Groomers tend to make around the same as these other positions.
There’s also a need for supervisors and managers within each store. These are the people that oversee the different departments and ensure that customer needs are meant. Supervisors can expect to start out around $9.50 per hour, and then can move upward from there. Management pay starts at around $35,000 per year, depending upon experience and the store’s level of profitability.
Why PetSmart?
PetSmart is one of the most trusted names in the industry when it comes to pets and pet supplies. They have a big existing customer base, and they are the first place that many people think of when they need something for a loved pet. Besides the name recognition and the career stability that comes along with this, Pet Smart offers competitive starting salaries, especially with entry level jobs. Many start out at minimum wage, but moving up in pay scale and responsibility is fast and easy for those that show maturity and dedication.
PetSmart offers benefits to many of their employees, including part time. You must be age 21 to qualify for the 401(k) program, and you need to have at least 1,000 hours with the company and at least six months on the job, but this can prove to be a helpful way to plan for your future. They also offer health insurance to fulltime employees, employee discounts, and paid time off for managers.
Who Can Apply?
You must be at least age 18 to work at PetSmart fulltime, although some locations will hire part time workers as young as 16. A high school degree or GED can be helpful if the position that you are applying for is competitive, but it’s not a must unless you are aspiring to go into management.
What’s Expected?
PetSmart employees are expected to be consistently at work on time. They should look and act professionally as they are representative of the company even if they are part time workers. It is also expected that they be knowledgeable of where items are located in the store, and should be able to help customers make educated decisions about products.
Tips for Gaining Employment
To apply for a position at PetSmart, go to their home page first. At the bottom of the page, there is a header titled, “About PetSmart.” The first link in this section is “Careers.” Click this, and it will take you to the employment section. From here, you can search for job openings by location or by a specific position that you might be interested in.
Before you begin the application, set aside enough time to make sure that you can focus on it without distractions. 45 minutes should be enough, especially if you already have a resume prepared. Fill out the questions thoroughly, and be sure to highlight any experience that you might have that will help a hiring manager to get a better feel for what you are capable of. This doesn’t need to be professional experience, either, as PetSmart’s entry level jobs focus more on your ability to work with other people and animals more than a professional background.
External Resources
At your interview, bring an extra copy of your resume and dress professionally. You should also be sure to be polite and direct with all answers to the questions that you are given. It can be helpful to have a few questions of your own prepared for the end of the interview, too, in case you are asked if you have any.
