Types of Jobs
Walgreens has many different types of jobs available. Some are simple, such as cashiers, sales associates, beauty advisors, and photo specialists, while others require more advanced training, such as management positions, pharmacists, and pharmacy technicians. The entry level positions usually start out paying around minimum wage or just over this, while managers can sometimes make as much as $35,000 to $70,000 a year, depending on location, experience, and position. Pharmacists can expect to make more than this, thanks to the need of a medical degree. As you can see, there is a lot of upward mobility in this career path, and getting your foot in the door is a great opportunity that will reward you right off the bat.
Walgreens is a respected company in the pharmacy line of business. They have a huge customer base, and they have expanded drastically over the years. They retain much of the small town ma and pop drug store feel, all while having the services that you would expect from a large, firmly established, corporate chain. They have many employee benefits, including 401(k) retirement accounts, health, vision, and dental insurance, and even offer employee perks such as corporate discounts. They do offer great drug coverage plans for employees, including a flex spending account. Many of their employee benefits are explicitly geared toward the LGBT community, as well, giving extra benefits here that may not be specifically included with respect to local minimum required coverage.
The greatest part of a Walgreens career is that there is so much mobility. If you need to move, there is most likely a Walgreens store that you can transfer to close by. Even within the same location, there are many opportunities for changing positions. Corporate positions do exist for employees that show extraordinary skill in their position.
Who Can Apply?
To apply for a Walgreens job, you must be at least 16 years old to get a part time position. Full time jobs start out at 18 years of age. Many locations prefer a high school diploma or a GED, but this is definitely not a hard and fast rule at all locations. For management positions, a business degree is helpful, preferably a four-year degree. If you are thinking of a career as a pharmacist, you will need your doctorate in this field, of course. Pharmacy technician positions expect some training, but much of this is provided on the job.
It’s not necessary to have experience to pursue a career at Walgreens. They have many entry level positions, and because it is a large company, starting out at the bottom and working your way up is not a strange thing. If you have a passion for helping customers, all while advancing your own personal position and rank within the store, this is a great place to pursue a livelihood. Mostly, the people that should apply to work here are those that take great pride in helping others live a happy and healthy life.
Walgreens’ employees are expected to be hardworking and professional. They are expected to know and be able to follow any legal regulations that pertain to their position. This applies most directly to those in pharmacy positions, as there are many laws pertaining to the dispensing of medications and privacy. Knowing how to work with both patients and insurance companies is a vital skill for those that wish to work as pharmacy technicians.
Employees are also expected to be able to follow under leadership. When your boss gives you a set of tasks, you are expected to be able to fulfill those tasks, and if you don’t know how, you should have the initiative to ask and find out exactly how to do them correctly.
Tips for Gaining Employment
Applying for a career at Walgreens is surprisingly simple. Go to their homepage, and then at the bottom of the page is a tab labeled “Company Information.” Under this heading is the Careers tab. Click this, and it will take you to a section that has information on employment. Here, you can select the area that you would like to focus on, career-wise. These include pharmacy positions, clinic positions, in-store jobs, corporate roles, and distribution careers.
While filling out the application, it’s important to set aside about 45 minutes to an hour that will be uninterrupted and solely devoted to the questions. They are pretty simple as far as applications go, but it’s important that you fill everything out completely, honestly, and accurately. Having a great, standout, application is the first step toward getting a job here. It is the first impression that a hiring manager will have of you, so it’s important that you do your best work with this.
Once you submit your application, you should wait for about a week before you should expect to hear anything. If you haven’t been contacted, it is acceptable to call the store or even stop by in person. If you decide to go in and check in person, dress nicely, be patient and polite, and act as if this is part of the interview process. You probably will not be offered an on the spot interview, but if you go in and express your sincere interest in the position, you now have given the hiring team a face and a personality to go along with the qualifications listed on your resume. This can go a long way toward helping your chances of getting hired, granted you look and act the part you are going for.
