Job Applicant QuestionsCategory: Applicationis it possible to be overqualified?
Martina L. Staff asked 7 years ago

I am looking for an easy, parttime job. I am having no luck though, no matter where I apply. I have a college degree and I was formerly a manager with the company I last worked at a few years ago. I was wondering if the problem is that I am too qualified for the jobs I am applying for?

Yes, it is possible to be too qualified for a job. Hiring managers look at not just what you are capable of doing at the job they are hiring for, but also whether or not you are likely to stay at that job. If you are overqualified, your odds of leaving that job for something better are higher than normal, thus hurting your chances of getting hired. If you are serious about a part-time job, explain that on your application so that they will know you are not unintentionally applying below your capability.
