Types of Jobs
There are a number of different job opportunities at Denny’s. These include servers, dishwashers, cooks, and managers within the store. There are also corporate positions as Denny’s is a publicly traded company.
Servers start out at $2 per hour, depending on the state’s restaurant minimum wage laws, with tips added on. These will vary depending on the time of day that you work, and the amount of business that your restaurant does. On a good day, a server can make over $100. Cooks will see their pay start out around $9 per hour, although with experience it can go up to $15. Managers see their pay average at about $40,000 per year, based upon experience.
Denny’s is a large company, and its presence has become a large part of many communities. This is a family style restaurant, and many families take their children here for meal. And because it’s open around the clock, it also has a café feel to it at times, increasing the chain’s customer base. Denny’s was founded in 1953, and they have grown immensely since then.
They do offer benefits to qualified employees. They offer health, vision, and dental insurance, 401(k) retirement packages, meal discounts, and paid time off. As a general rule of thumb, you need to work more than 30 hours a week to qualify for benefits.
Who Can Apply?
You need to be 16 years old to get a job at Denny’s. These are part time jobs, and consist of dishwashing, bussing, and serving only. In certain states, the hours which a 16-year-old may work will vary. At age 18, there are many more options for applicant. Because the restaurant is open 24 hours a day, you may be asked to have open availability in order to qualify for employment, too.
You do not need a high school diploma to get an entry level job at Denny’s, although it is helpful. Managers are expected to have a diploma or GED. If you are applying for a job in the kitchen, having professional cooking experience is necessary.
Employees are first and foremost expected to be at work when scheduled, on time, and ready to be helpful. They should be polite and have a good working attitude with customers and coworkers, too. All employees should be geared toward customer service, and have a strong knowledge of the menu and the items contained within it. This job also requires employees to be on their feet and moving around for hours at a time.
Tips for Gaining Employment
Denny’s has their application online at their home page, or you can go into a location and pick up a paper copy. The application is not complicated, and most people should be able to complete it in less than 45 minutes. To gain access to the web application, go to the bottom of their home page and click on the link titled “Careers.” From here, you can search openings and apply to the one of your choice.
When you go into the restaurant, whether it be for an interview or to pick up an application, be sure to dress nicely and act professionally. This is the first impression that you will be giving, and because this is such a highly visible position, any hiring manager will expect their employees to look and act the part that they are applying for naturally. At an interview, be sure to bring up any restaurant experience you have, or if you do not have this, mention any customer service experience you have. If you’re fresh out of school, or still in school, any volunteer activities that you have participated in can be helpful as a replacement. Answer questions completely, be polite, and be sure to look confident and friendly.
